Politico called John Michael Gonzalez “one of the most talented and nimble Democratic senior staffers on the Hill.” The National Journal said that Mr. Gonzalez “stands tall on the talent scorecard kept by Obama’s designated White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.”
Beginning his political career with the late Texas Governor Ann Richards, John Michael moved to Washington, DC to serve as Chief of Staff to Congressman Chris Bell (D-TX) and then to Congresswoman Melissa Bean (D-IL), a Co-Chair of the New Democrat Coalition, the largest group of moderates in the House. In Congress, John Michael helped lead efforts among House Democrats to pass the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement and the Peru-United States Free Trade Agreement.
Coordinating moderate think tank Third Way’s introduction to the House, John Michael brought this key progressive, pro-growth research resource to House Members, Caucus Leadership and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).
He served on the Obama-Biden Transition Project in the office of Congressional Affairs and was responsible for Congressional outreach to the House Committees on Financial Services, Energy & Commerce and Small Business. Because of his work with the Obama transition team and his several years in the moderate leadership of the House Democratic caucus, John Michael continues to be a trusted resource to most of the House Democratic Leadership as well as the pro-business New Democrat Coalition.
John Michael has played a key role in many significant legislative battles. For example, his advocacy helped secure passage of the Colombia Free Trade Agreement, exceeding expectations on this controversial bill. Together with Justin McCarthy, John Michael co-led our efforts on behalf of clients for Permanent Normal Trade Relations Status for Russia, and the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement. Most recently, John Michael and Justin led the advocacy effort for the renewal of Trade Promotion Authority on behalf of the Business Roundtable and the Trade Benefits America Coalition.
A critical victory for the Affordable Care Act was protecting the Senate/White House compromise on pharmaceutical issues. John Michael played a key role in mitigating efforts to undercut this important compromise.
John Michael was also heavily involved in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and continues to play an extensive role in implementation of the Affordable Care Act and Dodd-Frank.
